February 2, 1946

Hi Dad, I've read your next letter.  I did a bit of research on Karlsruhe. All through the research, I wondered what the city looked like when you were there as I read that it was beautiful, and then I read that it was nearly destroyed during the time of the writing of this letter.

Tragic to think of the devastation. And loss. There was so much loss. I was wondering, as I read, if that is where you got the beautiful tapestry that now stands behind a door in my office. I can’t afford to have it cleaned, but it’s beautiful all the same.

As I wondered about the tapestry, I began to read about what happened to the Jews who lived in Karlsruhe just before and during 1945. In my thoughts, the tapestry faded and cannot compare to their suffering. I know the man you became, Dad. You wouldn’t have believed in such horrific treatment of another person.

But you are strong; you made it home. I miss you so much.

Love you, Patti.
